Multi-purpose bike trailers

Making the most of the trailers

Today, Sri Lankan villagers with bicycle trailers have learned to make the most of the valuable new technology.

  • Farmers use trailers to carry their agricultural equipment from home to field and to collect fertilisers from market.

  • Women use them to do their shopping at markets, taking their babies and young children with them.

  • Families with a trailer now just have to make one trip a day to carry water, rather than several trips.

  • Trailers are used to carry house-building materials, such as bricks and cement. Brick-makers also use trailers to carry the water and sawdust they need to make bricks.

  • Bicycle trailers are used as ambulances, to carry sick people to hospitals and medical centres. This is especially useful at night, when no other vehicles are available.
