What would you think if you went home tonight and were told, 'Your dinner's cooking in a hole in the garden'?
Unless you're a New Zealand Maori, you'd probably be amazed. Their traditional cooker involves putting heated stones in holes in the soil. Food is wrapped, placed among the stones, and the hole is sealed.
How we cook depends a lot on the energy sources available. Most people around the world cook using fossil fuels - gas, oil, wood, charcoal - or electricity produced by burning fossil fuels. These are known as non-renewable sources of energy. Once we've used them, there won't be any more.
A few people, like the Maori, cook with energy sources that are sustainable (can be used over and over again). But on the whole, we all need to start paying more attention to the energy we use for things like cooking.
