Heating houses by sunlight

Activities

DMA (Resistant materials): Using working examples, mount an information campaign to raise public awareness about using solar energy for heating.

Product analysis: Work in pairs to find as many examples as you can of sustainable buildings.

Try using a website search or visit a local architect. You might contact the Design Council site and look for their Sharing Innovations section. Look at www.bre.co.uk as an example of a building using 30% less energy than comparable buildings and which used a large percentage of recycled materials in its construction. Visit www.akeler.co.uk to view a specially built office minimising energy.

Choose one building and produce an annotated diagram, showing the strengths and weaknesses of your choice in terms of efficient use of energy. Take it in turns to give five minutes presentations of your findings. Discuss your conclusions.
