Dr Roaf decided to design a house that used solar energy to heat rooms and to provide hot water and electricity for domestic use. The house was to use as little energy as possible and to keep carbon dioxide emissions to a minimum.
Many people think that solar power won't work effectively in the UK because it is often grey and cloudy. This is especially true in wintertime, when the sun is weak and might only shine for up to six hours a day, compared to mid-summer when it is light for over 18 hours.
Dr Roaf set out to prove that the sun could provide enough energy - even in the UK.
