Designing a new home

In recent years, life has changed dramatically for the Maasai people of Kenya:

It has become very difficult for the Maasai to make a living by herding alone and many have been forced to give up their nomadic lifestyle. As a result, they are keen to build better, more permanent homes.

Groups of Maasai women met with designers from Practical Action Kenya to talk about what they wanted and to draw up plans. The women were skilled in drawing in the sand and, given pen and paper, were able to draw what they wanted from their new homes. It was soon clear that the main things they were looking for were:
