Radio contact

The InfoDes programme

Practical Action's radio station project in Peru is part of a wider InfoDes (Information System for Urban and Rural Development) programme. This is aiming to provide a combined radio, telephone and internet system for rural communities.

Practical Action Peru has made a deal with a national telephone service to provide telephone connections in the area. A service already operates from the InfoDes office in the city of Cajamarca, but this will soon be extended to other towns. The plan is that, like the radio stations, the telephone service will operate at a local level. Through the telephone patching system, people will be able to communicate with the rest of the world for the first time.

In addition, the InfoDes office offers an internet service. It has a bank of computers that customers can use to access e-mail services, opening accounts with providers like Yahoo. They can also access the internet for information, on payment of a small fee.
