The famous psychologist Maslov talks about a hierarchy of needs. HIGHEST LEVEL Need for self-actualisation
(fulfilment, creativity, self-expression) Esteem needs
(self-respect, self-confidence, prestige) Belonging and love needs
(needing to be needed) Safety needs
(free from attack, sheltered from environment
) Physiological needs
(hunger and thirst) LOWEST LEVEL
We all need to meet the lowest level of needs first - these are essential for survival. So, why do we 'need' cosmetics? What level, or levels, of need do cosmetics meet?
- As a class, look at a collection of cosmetic products and talk about what level of need is met by each.
- Investigate the symbols and signs on cosmetic product labels. What do they mean?
- Choose one product and make up your own symbols to show information about where the product has come from and how it has been made (for example its country of origin, the sustainability of different ingredients).
